The use of face masks to impact transmission of the virus responsible has been wrought with some difficulty and has sparked high emotions.
Much as was seen in the Spanish Influenza Pandemic of 1918, similar social concerns and individual rights have been raised. This course has been developed to provide an overview of face masks and how they have and are being validated as a means of decreasing transmission of respiratory illness, including the virus responsible for the current COVID-19 pandemic.
After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:
・Describe the history of Face Mask use in previous respiratory viral pandemics.
・Illustrate how respiratory infections are spread and the rationale for mask use to impact this spread.
・Compare the various types of masks and how each has a specific use in different situations and environments.
・Describe how mask filtration works and its effectiveness in impacting viral transmission.
